A Shameless Act!

The blood has not even dried on the streets of Mumbai, there is still a raging battle going on inside the Taj but the BJP is asking for votes in the name of those who have died protecting the country.

It is rich that BJP is claiming to be the one who can keep the country safe because after all –

  • It is the BJP that has electoral ties with Shiv Sena and the Thackereys – people who are no less terrorists.
  • It was the BJP government which took terrorists in a jet to Kandahar begging for the life for Indian citizens.
  • It was the BJP government that was asleep at the wheel when the Kargil incursion happened.

What a shame and what a shameful advertisement – woe be on you Advani and gang.

So long suckers!

A great majority of the skill based non-immigrants waiting to legally immigrate to the US (in simple words, temporary worker visa holders waiting to get their green cards) are from South Asia. While these workers don’t win by numbers compared to illegal workers, they are definitely an asset to the American society. Largely law abiding, highly motivated and skilled, by some estimates, these people are responsible for starting upto 25% of the companies in the Silicon Valley.

These people have waiting patiently for years working their way through grad school or working in different jobs in different states in the hope of achieving that ever elusive American dream, and yet, when the US lawmakers had the chance to set the system right, they screwed this law abiding group, sending a strong message that in the US, illegal workers get the priority. US lawmakers often accuse President Bush of living in a bubble, but one wonders what kind of bubble are they themselves living in? Or maybe, they are not living in the bubble at all, because despite all the platitudes about this bill being forward looking, it actually is exceedingly favorible towards illegal workers. It seems like the lobbies of illegal immigrants were present behind closed doors when details of this bill were being thrashed out. You can read about some of the many flaws of this bill here, but to highlight just a few absolutely absurd ones:

  1. Instead of the current allocation of 140,000 immigrant visas (green card) to skilled workers, this bill brings it down to 90,000.
  2. It will require H1B holders to renew their visas on an annual basis.
  3. Under its merit based points system, an agriculture worker can earn 25 points for working 100 days a year for 5 years, while a skilled individual will get 10 points for working the same number of years!
  4. Economic contribution by the undocumented is recognized by awarding points for property ownership but not for people working legally.

Legal workers in the US have for years maintained the right of the United States to implement an immigration system that is fair and is in the best national interest of the country. By any reasonable standards, the current bill is neither in the best national interest of the US, nor does it offer a fair shake to the people who’ve been law abiding residents for years.

As of now, it seems like the powerful lobbies of Hispanic workers will be able to amend this bill even more in the favor of illegal workers while legal immigrants, majority of them do not have the time or the inclination to be activists, will be left holding the bag.

Where Are The Comments?

My apologies for deleting all your comments accidently. I obviously did not mean to, but I ran an incorrect query on my database (I am a cheapskate and my database is not backed up), and “boom”, all my comments were gone.

I hope that you realize how deeply I appreaciate your feedback and how sorry I am for loosing all the comments.

Lajja!

Nicholas Kristof, that tireless New York Times journalist is in India these days giving us a unique outsider’s perspective of problems plaguing the country. This week he visited the brothels of Calcutta and tells us the horrific story of Geeta Ghosh.

Geeta grew up in a village in rural India and attended only two months of school; like many of the girls who are trafficked, she is illiterate. Her own family abused her, but at age 11 she found refuge with her best friend’s aunt.

For a year, “Auntie” looked after Geeta with a warmth that she had never found at home. Then one day when Geeta was 12 – but still physically a little girl, well short of puberty – the aunt took her to a beauty parlor. “You look a bit ugly, so why not try to look prettier?” Auntie suggested.

Then the aunt locked her in a soundproof room in a brothel with an Arab man who bought her virginity. “I was very terrified to see this huge man in front of me,” Geeta remembers, adding, “I cried a lot and fell to his feet, pleading.”

“He pulled off my dress, and the rapes went on for a month like that. He made me sleep naked beside him, and he drank a lot, and he hurt me so much.”

After this Geeta was peddled on open streets for 5 years until a Taxi driver who used to visit her regularly helped her escape and later married her.

I visited the one-room hovel where Geeta and her family now live in a Calcutta slum. The home is the size of a walk-in American closet, mostly taken up by a bed raised up on bricks. Three of the children sleep on the bed, and the parents and the youngest child sleep underneath it. The slum is squalid, and a nearby sewage canal sometimes floods their home – but Geeta is happy, because she is free.

And then this telling statistic

India alone may have half a million children in its brothels, more than any other country in the world.

We can try and put the blame on a lot of people for this situation. The people who push children into this trade, the people who are the clientale for prostitutes. But in my view, it is that police guy on the beat who turns the other way under the influence of bribe who is the main culprit. Yes, people will try and commit crimes, yes they will try and defeat the law but it is only when the people in authority turn the other way does the system break down and this is what has happened here.

Oh the irony!

Saw this picture of Germans protesting against Iranians getting nukes on CNN.com. Not that I want the mullahs to have nukes – not by a long long shot. But oh the irony of a country that gave us two world wars, millions of dead jews in gas chamber and one Hitler(thank god!), protesting against Mullahs getting the nukes!
